In these turbulent economic times, most of us have become used to the
up and downs that the economy can bring. However, we shouldn't put up
with those same kinds of ups and downs when it comes to our health.
The key to enjoying good health is maintaining a strong immune system.
When it comes to fighting off infectious diseases, our immune system
is our first and best line of defense. Unfortunately, there are many
factors that can weaken or disable our immune systems. In fact, many
elements of running a small business, such as stress and lack of sleep,
are potential threats to a strong, healthy immune system.
Here are just a few common-sense steps you can take to make sure that
you don't suffer from the effects of a weak immune system.
1) Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet.
The foods you eat affect your whole health system, including your immune
system. Don't fall into the "microwave food that I can eat at my computer"
trap -- eat well-balanced meals, and make sure you get enough Vitamin
A, C, and E (antioxidants).
2) Get plenty of exercise.
Studies have shown that exercising regularly can boost the immune system
and improve circulation. That means you should take time from your computer
every so often and take a walk or do some sort of other light exercise.
Of course, check with a physician before starting any exercise program.
3) Avoid Stress whenever possible.
Stress just seems to be part of running a business, but you should
do whatever you can to lessen the stress you encounter in your daily
life. High levels of emotional or psychological stress have been shown
to decrease white blood cell activity, which weakens your entire immune
system. Try to maintain your social contacts, and keep an optimistic
attitude.
In addition to these steps, you can also help to strengthen your immune
system by getting a sufficient amount of rest and avoiding smoking,
drugs, or alcohol. There are also natural dietary supplements that can
help provide antibodies and immune co-factors that will help your body
resist disease and fight off the effects of autoimmune diseases like
diabetes, arthritis, lupus, and fibromyalgia.
Whatever your method for remaining healthy, just remember this: No
amount of money is worth it if you can't enjoy it. Take care of your
business -- but also, take care of yourself.
